Keeping your child(ren) safe on Halloween

We, as adults, had fun at Jimmy's Tavern Saturday night.  Halloween fun for children is right around the corner.

Now that I am older I think about children and Halloween...and I think about my childhood Halloween days.  I was taught to look both ways before crossing the street EVERY DAY but I think I forgot this when a group of kids would say "hey, that house across the street has......" and we were off.

Let's not forget our costumes....some dark colors and others with masks.  So if we had masks on we couldn't see the cars coming and with dark costumes the cars couldn't see us.

According to the World Health Organization nearly a million children die each year from unintentional accidents and most of them are from car accidents.

So what can you do to keep your children safe?
  • Talk to your children about safety on the streets.  AND no matter how much they understand, remember the excitement of the house across the street may be too much for them to remember.
  • Have a responsible adult or older child go with them.
  • Halloween costumes need to either be bright or have reflectors on them so vehicles can SEE them.
  • Set boundaries for your children off busy streets.
  • Send a flashlight with them.
  • If wearing a mask please make sure they have clear vision AND they can hear out of the mask.
  • Make sure all costumes fit the child.  Not too loose or too long so they don't trip.
  • Make sure all children are in groups.
  • Weather is tricky this time of year so be prepared for that cold winter night..dress warm.
Please remind children NOT to eat anything until you have been able to inspect the candy.

With all these warning this needs to be a safe night for your child BUT it still needs to be FUN!!!!

Be afraid....be very very afraid

It is that time of year....Halloween.  What better way to spend it than with friends dressed up and singing.

Halloween just isn't for children.  We grew up with the anticipation of the upcoming holiday.  Dressing up, going door to door and scoring bags full of candy.  Sugar high for a month.

That anticipation doesn't diminish with age.  As adults we still look forward to dressing up but the difference is instead of going door to door we head to our local tavern for some adult Halloween time.

Our costumes may be bigger and in some cases smaller but the idea behind the holiday is the same....get together with a group for a great time.

October 27, 2012 is a day for adults to do this.  Where?  Jimmy's Tavern, Pueblo West, CO.

This party is for adults who want to strut their stuff.  And strutting your stuff will score you free drinks this night.

Karaoke is always happening on Saturday nights at Jimmy's and this Saturday is no different.  The only difference is the costumes.  You can score free drinks by being voted best costume and/or costumes that have a Karaoke theme to them....Like to sing the Beatles songs:  Dress like John Lennon.  Sing a Halloween song and score a few prizes that way also.  (Need an idea click HERE so you can practice before Saturday night).

You can start the celebration with a scavenger hunt that ends at Jimmy's Tavern so make it a day of fun!!!

The guy next to you

You never know a person's story......

You never know what a person has lived through, until you sit next to them at a bar and enjoy a beer with them.

You would never know this person fought oversees.
You would never know this person battled cancer and won.
You would never know this person lost a child.
You would never know this person lost a spouse.
You would never know this person donates to local charities every month.
You would never know this person donated his kidney so another could live.

That's the nice thing about a local bar or tavern.  The person you would never get to have a conversation with....talks to you.  You build a relationship and learn more about the person on the next stool than some know about their own family.

When you visit a local bar or tavern you become a family.  A family that is more.  It is more conversation.  It is more understanding.  It is more...than the rest of world will ever see.

The next time you are sitting by someone....ask them to share their story and you share yours.  A bond happens that is amazing.

When you are at you local bar or tavern everyone is the same.  No one cares that you don't make as much money as them.  If you find the right local bar or tavern you become one with everyone.  Why not give it a try?

“. . .sometimes one feels freer speaking to a stranger than to people one knows. Why is that?“Probably because a stranger sees us the way we are, not as he wishes to think we are.”  Carlos Ruiz Zafón

What makes a good bar or tavern?

We've all watched Patrick Swayze in Road House or, at least, most of us have.  I can safely assume that most of us would not like to be a customer at a bar like those and most of us wouldn't patronize a bar like that.

So what makes a good bar or tavern?

First let's look at the owner:  If you are a customer in a bar or tavern do you know the owner?  Can you talk to the owner?  Does the owner know you?  If the answer to this is yes, than chances are it is a good bar or tavern.

Another view about the owner:  Does the owner "give back" to his customers?  This could be by giving back to the community, non-profits and/or customers themselves.  I have always found that a bar/tavern owner who is active in his community and donates to charities are above others.  These action show a true heart, a caring heart and it shows that he/she wants the best and those who want the best and are willing to give of themselves will take care of you in their establishment.

Now let's look at the bar staff; bartenders and waitstaff:  Do they know what you drink when you walk in?  Is your drink ready for you when you sit down?  Do they know how many you "normally" drink before you are done?  Do they know your name and something personal about you; your job, your hobbies, etc.?  Do they TALK to you during the down times or while doing side work?  Can you have a easy conversation with them?  If the answer to these questions are yes than you have a good bar/tavern.

Other patrons of the bar:  Every bar/tavern has their regulars.  Are the other patrons of the bar similar to you?  Are the within your age group?  Do they enjoy a good time without negativity or drama?  Do you feel comfortable talking to them while you are there?  If the answer is yes than you have a good bar/tavern.

The Atmosphere:  Is the music that is normally played music you enjoy?  Are there televisions so you can watch sports?  Is it a fight free atmosphere?  Ares there special events; Live music, Karaoke, games that happen?  If the answer is yes you have a good bar/tavern.

If you answered yes to the above questions you have probably been to Jimmy's Tavern in Pueblo West, Colorado or you have one that is similar where you live.

Everything that has been described above would be under the definition of Jimmy's Tavern in the dictionary.  If you are in Southern Colorado and have not experienced the Jimmy's Tavern life I highly suggest you to give it a try!

If you have a bar that fits this description please tell me about it.

Who gets breast cancer?
Sex
•  Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, accounting for nearly 1 in 3 cancers diagnosed in US women.
•  Men are generally at low risk for developing breast cancer; however, they should report any change in their breasts to a physician.
Age
•  Breast cancer incidence and death rates generally increase with age (Figure 1, page 1). Ninety-five percent of new cases and 97% of breast cancer deaths occurred in women 40 years of age and older.
•  During 2004-2008, among adult women, those 20-24 years of age had the lowest incidence rate, 1.5 cases per 100,000 women; women 75-79 years of age had the highest incidence rate, 421.3 cases per 100,000. The decrease in incidence rates that occurs in women 80 years of age and older may reflect lower rates of screening, the detection of cancers by mammography before 80 years of age, and/or incomplete detection.
•  During 2004-2008, the median age at the time of breast cancer diagnosis was 61 years.
This means that 50% of women who developed breast cancer were 61 years of age or younger at the time of diagnosis.

Jimmy's Tavern is turning PINK this month; October 2012 to support Breast Cancer Awareness!  You can join them.

Going to work on your day off

How many of you can say you WANT to go to work on your day off?  Honestly, who has that kind of job?  That kind of time? Or that kind of boss that you would want to be around on your day off?

I will tell you who:
This is Jimmy's Tavern, located in Pueblo West, Colorado and this is where you will find a job where you want to go to on your day off.

Picture it:  Sunday afternoon, Broncos play the Raiders.  What better place to be than a bar watching the game.

Meet Karen:  Karen is one of the best bartenders.  When she is behind the bar you are her number one priority.

BUT...when Karen has a day off AND the Broncos play the Raiders.....her number one priority is cheering on the Broncos!!  (I still watched her take care of the customers)

Karen's theme song at the end of the game.(have to say it was a wonderful game Broncos 37 Raiders 6)  Sorry Raider fans but had to rub it in one more time.

So if you don't have a job you want to go to on your day off.....go to Jimmy's Tavern.  It's a great place to be!!  Jimmy's has a great month planned for breast cancer awareness!  Check out their Facebook page for more information!
