Wingman or not?

Okay, you want to go to a bar and meet new people but you don't know if you need a "wingman" to go with you.

First off a wingman is someone who "reels" someone in and it works out better for you if that person is in a serious HAPPY committed relationship.  What good is a wingman if they are going to keep everyone they reel in for you, right?

Next your wingman has to have a personality that attracts but does not over-shadow yours.

Finally, your wingman has to be attractive enough to reel them in but not so attractive that no one focuses on you.

I say....forget the wingman and go alone.  This will force you to talk to others while you are there.  When you talk to others you get to know them.  You may not meet your soul mate the first time out....I mean, really, who does.  What you will get is new friends, a new place to hang out and the ability to be in great company.

Want to meet that special person?  Be yourself and don't play games and bringing a wingman is, let's face it, a game.

Now, if you want to go out with friends and have a good time (which, honestly, is the best way to attract someone) than get a group of people (or just a buddy) and go have a good time with no expectations or intentions.  Smile, laugh and enjoy because these actions are truly the most attractive qualities anyone is looking for.

Elvis Presley Quick Facts

The King of Rock and Roll (1935-1977)

Grew up in poverty to be the most unique voice of his time.  Everyone loved him, especially teenagers.  His music, a combination of Rhythm & blues, county, pop and gospel and his stage appearance was what attracted the church people; and not in a positive way being nick named "Elvis the Pelvis."

In the mid 50's (1956) he starred in "Love Me Tender" which had been a lifelong dream for him.  During this time, with the exception of his time in the army, he was recording songs, doing live concerts and making movies.  When he returned from the army in 1961 he exclusively did movies

In 1969 the movie making became dissatisfying as they all seemed to be the "same" movie with a different title so he kicked off his sing career with a month long concert at the Las Vegas International Hotel in 1969.  From this time, until the time of his death in 1977, he toured all over the United States making history with his shows, costumes and box office breaking records.

1960s saw Elvis acting in one movie after another (for example "Flaming Star", "Blue Hawaii", and "Viva Las Vegas"), until finally his films ended up being produced like from an assembly line with a set pattern. Elvis grew dissatisfied with his acting career and totally quit making movies in 1969. Instead he started giving live concerts again - encouraged by the good response of the TV special aired in 1968 and by the triumphant success of a month-long concert engagement at the Las Vegas International Hotel in 1969.

The time from 1970 till his death at 1977 Elvis spent touring in concerts all over the United States - around 1,000 concerts total. He also had long engagements in Las Vegas International Hotel each year. He made history with these elaborate shows, his costumes (most often various jumpsuits) breaking box office records.

Elvis and Priscilla (married in 1967) had one child, Lisa Marie, born in 1968.

Say what you want about how Elvis lived and how he died but he sold over one billion albums worldwide, has over 100 gold/platinum awards for his music and is, still today, the most popular artist ever.  My personal favorite is Jailhouse Rock and you can enjoy it here.

How to plan the best, first date

A First Date

The perfect date.  What is it and how do you know if you planned it correctly?

The first thing you need to do is KNOW who you are taking out on a date.  This may be easy but often times it is the first date you get to "know" the "exterior" of a person.  Ask yourself these questions:
  1. Does your date like the outdoors vs. indoors?
  2. Does your date like to talk?  I know this seems like an odd question because how do you get to know someone unless you talk, right?  Not so easy.
  3. Does your date extroverted or introverted?  Extroverted is a person who is outgoing, friendly, generally likes a crowd where introverted people tend to be quiet and not be the center of attention.
Outdoors vs. Indoor dates:  If your date likes to rock climb, jog, play sports it is a good idea to take him/her on a date that they are comfortable doing....unless you are clearly the opposite.  You don't have to go ski diving but you will want to plan a date that is outside or active.  If they are athletic there is usually a basketball court in a park that you can join a game of pick up or just play one on one.  If your date prefers the indoors dinner and a movie is a great choice.

Before you decide what you are doing ask yourself question #2:  Are they comfortable talking?  I have a hard time understanding "not talking" but there are some out there that are shy.  If your date is on the shy part don't put them on a date where a lot of talking is required....here the movie or a concert would be perfect.  If they like to talk going to dinner and a walk afterwards allows for the comfort of no crowds but the ability to have a conversation.

Extroverted vs. Introverted:  Should be simple right?  Extroverted goes to a Karaoke bar Introverted goes to a movie.  This is not always so simple as an extroverted person may be out-going around their comfort zone but introverted with a karaoke mike thrown in their face.

If you know their friends....ASK!  If you don't know their friends, ask your date.  The best first date would be a date that is comfortable for both.  Ask him/her what they would like to do.  The usual response is "whatever is fine."  This is not the answer you accept.  This is a great time to get creative:  When you show up have three options and let them choose which one they would like.

No matter what you do, no matter where you go ALWAYS be yourself NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU LIKE THAT PERSON.  If you are yourself and you don't "click" on that first date you have not lost anything and you have gained a potential friend.  When you pretend to like "stuff" you don't really like it will eventually come out and it will happen at the worst time so be true to yourself.  One word of caution:  Never get drunk or drink "a bit too much."  You are responsible for their safety and fun.

The first date does not need to be romantic, expensive or outrageous....it just need to be.

I would love to hear from you about what your perfect date would be and what your best date has been.

Colorado State Fair

It's that time.........Dippin Dots, Funnel Cake, Indian Fry Bread, Turkey Leg......now one of those has got your mouth watering....don't lie.

I know for me....I have to get the Dippin Dots and Indian Fry Bread.

Let's face it....there is something at the State Fair for us all...animals, carnival rides and games, exposition, rodeo, concerts and all kinds of crap to buy (my favorite part after Dippin Dots and Indian Fry Bread).

The State Fair website is pretty easy to manuever through.  You just hit the tab that interests you and you have the schedule OR you can hit the day of the week you plan on attending and there is that day's schedule.

One event I cannot wait for is Pets Overboard (I am such an animal lover):
This description is copied from the website:

Pets Overboard!
1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day
Sunshine Park

Pets Overboard!! is an exciting and fun show for the whole family, featuring pets rescued from animal shelters. The cast of dogs, cats and rats will keep you laughing and entertained on their journey on board their pirate ship while they look for lost treasure. The show offers great audience participation and ends with well, not a gun fight, but a friendly competition among our K-9 pirates.
The animals in this show have all been rescued from shelters and located by rescue organizations. Fair fans can also ask questions and learn more about pet ownership during each 20-25 minute show
.

Gotta love folks who rescue animals from animal shelters and train them!!

Want to get served faster in a bar? Follow these steps

You walk up to the bar.  You wait.  You wait some more.  What the heck is the bartender doing anyway, I know he/she sees me.  Wait, I was here before that guy.

Has this ever happened to you?  If so, you may need to read this and learn what YOU can do to get better service.  Remember, just because they are there to serve you doesn't mean you are worthy of being served.

  1. Slamming your empty bottle or glass on the bar does not make you a favorite at a bar.  No one like a temper tantrum and whether you meant it that way or not...that's how it looks.  A good bartender will know you need another drink before YOU know so subtlety is the best approach.
  2. Raising your money over your head....the bartender doesn't think "wow a customer who finally has money, let me run right over."  Imagine your job, you are trying to complete it and someone is waving a pen at you.  All it is....is distracting and will delay getting your drink.  It may not look like they saw you but they do.
  3. When the bartender approaches you, know what you want to drink.  There is nothing worse than waiting five minutes for you to decide between the fuzzy navel and sex on the beach...the only difference is cranberry juice...either you want it or you don't.
  4. Have your money ready before your drinks are....even if you don't know how much it is going to be.  Don't wait until they tell you how much it is before you pull your wallet out and if you really want good service don't turn to the guy next to you and talk to him while doing this.
  5. Don't expect to get free drinks.....no matter who you are or how much you spend.  If they don't own the bar they may not have the authority to give you a free drink.  Some bars have a strict policy on this.  Don't make the bartender, other customers and yourself uncomfortable with this expectation.
  6. Had a drink at another bar and just "loved it" so you order it at another bar.  Don't get upset because it doesn't taste the same.  Each bartender is different.  If it doesn't taste like you remember ask the bartender nicely.  Good point to remember:  If you are somewhere and love how the drink was made...ask the bartender how it was made.  This allows you to tell the next one how you like it.  If you do it nicely bartenders will appreciate the new information.
  7. Don't like something about the bar....don't complain to the bartender unless they own the place.  If the music is to loud....ask if they will turn it down, don't complain about it.  If the TV is on basketball and you want to watch golf....ask.  No one likes a complainer...so don't be one.
  8. Don't be a jerk.  A jerk fights, degrades other people, acts like they "own the place," demands service....I could go on with this list but you know them when you see them.  If you are a jerk NO ONE wants to be around you, especially the one who has to be.
  9. Last call is NOT AN OPTION!  That drink that you want so bad.....why didn't you think about it 60 seconds ago?  Serving after 2:00 AM means BIG TROUBLE for the bar, the bar owner and the bartender.  If you are a "jerk" about this, trust me the bartender will remember you.
  10. DON'T FORGET TO TIP!  I have said this before and I will say it again.....tips are part of their wages!  You could not live on their wages so don't expect them to.  If it is your first time tip big in the beginning.  Let them know you will take care of them if they take care of you.  If you are a regular it is NOT okay to not tip.  If you go to the bar every day and have three drinks....your personality, no matter how good, does not pay the bills.  If you can afford to go every day...you can afford to treat your bartender well.
Hope this helps you get better service and helps all the bar staff out there.  One final note:  please remember that bartenders are HUMAN!  I know it's hard to grasp this thought but they are.  Even the best bartender will make mistakes.  They are often harder on themselves than you could ever be so DON'T MAKE IT WORSE.

Good thought here:  "People may forget what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel."  (Dr. Thomas L. Garthwaite)  Watch this video...this may not happen but the thought is there when you are a bad customer.

Joke of the Day

Driving home
very drunk

It seems a gentleman had too much alcohol at a party, was heading home, and was pulled over by a state trooper. Upon being tested, the fellow couldn't walk a straight line any more than he could drive one, so the trooper wrote out a ticket and had just given it to the driver before an accident in the opposite lane took his attention to more important matters.

The inebriated driver, figuring that the trooper wasn't coming back to him, drove home and went to bed. he was awakened in the morning by a knock at the door, created by two more state troopers.

"Are you Mr. Johnson?" the asked? He admitted that he was.

"Were you pulled over at Main Street last night for driving under the influence?" Again, the man admitted that was he.

"And what did you do then," the troopers asked." The man replied that he drove his car home and went to bed.

"Where is your car now?" the troopers enquired. The man answered that it was in the garage.

"May we see the car?" asked the troopers. The man answered, "Sure," and opened the garage.

Inside the garage was the state troopers car.

Please don't drink and drive.                          Like Jimmy's Tavern on Facebook.

History of the Broncos: The decade that changes everything 1980's

This decade started off....well, true to Bronco history.  1980 proved to be another bad year but it was the beginning of something great.

1981 a coach by the name of Dan Reeves takes over and although there was no postseason games this year it was the start of Bronco History.

Player strike for two months start of the 1982 season which showed there were struggles on both the offense and defense with their first losing season in seven years....but we all know what happened in the following year!!

Elway baby!!!  1983 Broncos starting Quaterback!  Even though this year for the Broncos was a flip of the coin with a 9-7 record...we all know, looking back, that this is the year it began for the Bronco offense!  Watch this video of Elway's first game.

1984:  Elway cost the Bronco's chance at the AFC Championship by a turnover against the Steelers but this season they had a 10 game winning streak which was the new franchise record.  Elway passes 2,598 yards, Sammy Winder rushes for 1,153 yards and Steve Watson has 1,170 receiving yards.  Pat Bowlen, local Businessman acquires the Broncos.

11-5 record ends 1985 and although they do not make the playoffs, Elway is establishing his "one of the best Quarterbacks in the NFL" status with 3891 passing yards and 253 rushing yards.

Off to a great start in 1986 and, although they would claim the AFC West title with an 11-5 record, they end the season three of their five final games.  Super Bowl XXI was in the Bronco future because of Rich Karlis and his 33 yard Field Goal against Cleveland.

Rich Karlis may have gotten the Broncos to the Super Bowl but missed two short Field Goals while there.  They lose to the Giants 39-20.

Did anyone say "Strike?"  Replacement players are brought in in 1897 as the NFL Players go on strike. The win against the Chicago Bears turned things around this season as they won the AFC West with a 10-4-1 record.  Elway wins the NFL MVP this year and the Broncos face the Browns again for the AFC Championship.  38-33 Win Super Bowl XXII next stop.

Bronco's vs. Redskins in San Diego was....how should I put this, great coming out of the gate but not much for stamina.  Bronco's lose, after a 10-0 start, 42-10.

How can passing be a "poor showing" with 3,309 yard but for John Elway it is.  Ending the 1988 season with an 8-8 record Running Back Tony Dorsett, acquired from the Dallas Cowboys, has second all time rushing with 703 yards.

Despite Dorsett's career ending knee injury in 1989 the Boncos win the Division Title with an 11-5 record.  Beating the Steelers in the Divisional Playoffs (which was a gut wrenching win at 24-23) the Broncos face the Browns, again, for the AFC Championship with a 38-21 win.

Here we are again, Super Bowl XXIV only to tie the NFL record by losing four Super Bowl's to the 49ers 55-10.

Four Super Bowl's....Four losses.  Although this is not what Denver was hoping for it did show fans what Denver was capable of.  Although there were loses this decade no one can dispute that this was a whole new ballgame for Denver.

Denver Bronco History: 1970's

The last decade was hard....but the fans stayed loyal.  Does the 1970's give the fans a reason to remain loyal?  Read to find out.

The first year of the 1970's was off to a great start with a 4-1 record but as the last decade proved it was not meant to be as they finished last in the AFC West with a 5-8-1 record losing eight of their last nine games.

You guessed it, Lou Saban resigns and interim Coach Jerry Smith finished 1971 with a record of 4-9-1.

John Ralston is the new Coach but does not improve the Denver Bronco's record ending 1972 with a 5-9 record.  The one positive part of 1972 was even with the Denver Bronco's losing season tickets were being sold at a record pace.....gotta love that Bronco loyalty.

Orange Monday begins with the Broncos hosting the Oakland Raiders in front of a National Televised audience.  Primetime baby!  1973 proved to be the best year yet for the Broncos as they have a six game winning streak and, for once, had the opportunity to have their first winning season.  With the AFC West title just within their grasp they lose to the Oakland Raiders and end the season with a 21-17.

1974 the Denver Broncos had to expand Mile High Stadium to accommodate the high demand for tickets.  It was worth it as this was their second winning season with a 7-6-1 record.

With 1975 was a disappointment as the Broncos ended their winning season streak with at 6-8 record.  This was also Running Back Floyd Little's final season.

1976 showed much promise.  The Broncos end the season with a 9-5 record, Running Back Otis Armstrong rushes for 1,008 yards but Coach John Ralston resigns.

Red Miller, new coach for the Broncos, really turn up the heat this season.  In 1977, the Orange Crush begins with players like Lyle Alzado, Randy Gradishar and Tom Jackson.  The Orange Crush allowed only 148 points to be scored the entire season.  The Broncos earn a trip to the AFL Championship game against, you guessed it, the Raiders.  With a 20-17 win the Broncos are off to their very first Super Bowl!!!  With the excitement of playing in New Orleans against the Dallas Cowboys the Broncos never really showed up for the Super Bowl.  Eight turnovers and a 27-10 loss is how they ended their season.

Randy Gradishar wins Defensive Player of the Year in 1978 and the Broncos win the AFC West title for the second year in a row with at 10-6 record.  In the Divisional Playoffs the Pittsburgh Steelers will end the season for the Broncos with a 33-10 loss.

1979 started off well for the Broncos and it was looking like another Division Title was in their future but during the Divisional Playoffs they lose to the Oilers 13-7 and end their season with a 10-6 record.

History of the Denver Broncos the beginning: 1960's

It's Football season!!!

Time for friends to get together and watch their favorite teams.  So many traditions have been started because of football.

How did it get started?  We are going to look at the Denver Broncos and how they got started.

First off did you know that our football team was not the first to be named Denver Broncos?  In 1921 the Midwest Baseball league was also called the Denver Broncos.

In 1960 is when the Denver Broncos Football began with seven other teams to make up the AFL.  They had a fan contest which is how they became known as the Denver Broncos.  In 1960 the Denver Broncos had the worst record of the AFL or 4-9-1 but it has to be said that one of their four winnings was against the Raiders.

In 1961 Wide Receiver Lionel Taylor was the first player to catch 100 passes in a professional season but the Broncos finished the season with only a 3-11 record.  This caused Jack Faulkner to replace Frank Filchock as coach.  In 1962 Coach Jack Faulkner receives coach of the year with a 7-7 record (Five of those loses were the last five of the season.)

1963 was not a good year for the Broncos as their record was 2-11-1 but this year Fullback Billy Joe wins AFL Rookie of the Year.

As it still is today, in 1964 Jack Faulkner is fired after a 0-4 record in the beginning of the season and is replaced by Mac Speedie.  He didn't do much better as they ended the season with a 2-11-1 record.

Loyalty is Loyalty and Denver fans remain loyal no matter what the Bronco record is.  In 1965 they finish with a 4-10 season but sell over 20,000 season tickets.

You guessed it, Mac Speedie is fired in 1966 and in come Ray Malavasi but with only a record of 0-2 Malavasi has his work cut out.  They finish with a 4-10 record and, again, the Denver Broncos are looking for a new coach.  Lou Saban comes in as both the General Manager and the Coach.

Running Back Floyd Little becomes the firs top draft pick ever signed by the Denver Broncos in 1967.  Even though they had their first top draft pick their season ends with a 3-11 record.

1968 the Stadium is renamed Mile High Stadium, capacity is increased to 50,000 and Marlin Briscoe became the first black starting Quarterback in professional football.  Their season ends with a 5-9 record with Briscoe throwing 14 touchdown passes and running for another three.

One decade down and in 1969 end their season with a 5-8-1 record.  During this decade the Denver Broncos are the only AFL team not to win a division or finish with a winning record.
