How to sing Karaoke!

Singing Karaoke....it is either one of the best things you do or the most terrifying things you won't do.  I will tell you this....when you get the courage to go up there and sing AND you have fun doing it...it doesn't matter how you sound.  


For those of you who are still worried about it here's a few things you can do to prepare for your Karaoke debut.

1. Sing whenever and wherever you can:  To begin with....you know the old saying about singing in the shower....JUST DO IT!
2. Sing with confidence!  Remember, Karaoke is a SHOW.  Have fun and enjoy the environment.  Each person that is up there.....had their first time also!
3. Stand up straight.  It will be easier to sing if you are standing up straight.  Remember your mother telling you this while you were growing up?  Great time to do this as it will help you sing and it helps you with confidence.
4. Leave your shyness at the door.  Have a drink to relax, breath to relax but standing at the mic you cannot be shy.  If you are shy....your singing will not be confident.  Belt it out.  Who cares how you sound as long as you are having fun.
5. Practice.  Find songs that you know and love.  Sing them in the car, in the shower or wherever the mood strikes you.  Find a few songs you love and get those down.  Don't try a "new" song your first time up there.

With all of these tips there is one thing in common:  FUN FUN FUN!!!  

If you need encouragement...bring friends up to the stage with you BUT YOU HOLD THE MIC!!  Most Karaoke DJ's will also help....they want you to have fun so you tell everyone about them.

You only live once, right?  Get busy living or get busy dying (Shawshank Redemption).

Wingman or not?

Okay, you want to go to a bar and meet new people but you don't know if you need a "wingman" to go with you. 

First off a wingman is someone who "reels" someone in and it works out better for you if that person is in a serious HAPPY committed relationship.  What good is a wingman if they are going to keep everyone they reel in for you, right?



Next your wingman has to have a personality that attracts but does not over-shadow yours.

Finally, your wingman has to be attractive enough to reel them in but not so attractive that no one focuses on you.

I say....forget the wingman and go alone.  This will force you to talk to others while you are there.  When you talk to others you get to know them.  You may not meet your soul mate the first time out....I mean, really, who does.  What you will get is new friends, a new place to hang out and the ability to be in great company.

Want to meet that special person?  Be yourself and don't play games and bringing a wingman is, let's face it, a game. 

Now, if you want to go out with friends and have a good time (which, honestly, is the best way to attract someone) than get a group of people (or just a buddy) and go have a good time with no expectations or intentions.  Smile, laugh and enjoy because these actions are truly the most attractive qualities anyone is looking for.

Want to get served faster in a bar? Follow these steps

You walk up to the bar.  You wait.  You wait some more.  What the heck is the bartender doing anyway, I know he/she sees me.  Wait, I was here before that guy.  




Has this ever happened to you?  If so, you may need to read this and learn what YOU can do to get better service.  Remember, just because they are there to serve you doesn't mean you are worthy of being served.

1. Slamming your empty bottle or glass on the bar does not make you a favorite at a bar.  No one like a temper tantrum and whether you meant it that way or not...that's how it looks.  A good bartender will know you need another drink before YOU know so subtlety is the best approach.  
2. Raising your money over your head....the bartender doesn't think "wow a customer who finally has money, let me run right over."  Imagine your job, you are trying to complete it and someone is waving a pen at you.  All it is....is distracting and will delay getting your drink.  It may not look like they saw you but they do.  
3. When the bartender approaches you, know what you want to drink.  There is nothing worse than waiting five minutes for you to decide between the fuzzy navel and sex on the beach...the only difference is cranberry juice...either you want it or you don't.
4. Have your money ready before your drinks are....even if you don't know how much it is going to be.  Don't wait until they tell you how much it is before you pull your wallet out and if you really want good service don't turn to the guy next to you and talk to him while doing this.  
5. Don't expect to get free drinks.....no matter who you are or how much you spend.  If they don't own the bar they may not have the authority to give you a free drink.  Some bars have a strict policy on this.  Don't make the bartender, other customers and yourself uncomfortable with this expectation.
6. Had a drink at another bar and just "loved it" so you order it at another bar.  Don't get upset because it doesn't taste the same.  Each bartender is different.  If it doesn't taste like you remember ask the bartender nicely.  Good point to remember:  If you are somewhere and love how the drink was made...ask the bartender how it was made.  This allows you to tell the next one how you like it.  If you do it nicely bartenders will appreciate the new information.
7. Don't like something about the bar....don't complain to the bartender unless they own the place.  If the music is to loud....ask if they will turn it down, don't complain about it.  If the TV is on basketball and you want to watch golf....ask.  No one likes a complainer...so don't be one.  
8. Don't be a jerk.  A jerk fights, degrades other people, acts like they "own the place," demands service....I could go on with this list but you know them when you see them.  If you are a jerk NO ONE wants to be around you, especially the one who has to be.
9. Last call is NOT AN OPTION!  That drink that you want so bad.....why didn't you think about it 60 seconds ago?  Serving after 2:00 AM means BIG TROUBLE for the bar, the bar owner and the bartender.  If you are a "jerk" about this, trust me the bartender will remember you.
10. DON'T FORGET TO TIP!  I have said this before and I will say it again.....tips are part of their wages!  You could not live on their wages so don't expect them to.  If it is your first time tip big in the beginning.  Let them know you will take care of them if they take care of you.  If you are a regular it is NOT okay to not tip.  If you go to the bar every day and have three drinks....your personality, no matter how good, does not pay the bills.  If you can afford to go every day...you can afford to treat your bartender well.  

Hope this helps you get better service and helps all the bar staff out there.  One final note:  please remember that bartenders are HUMAN!  I know it's hard to grasp this thought but they are.  Even the best bartender will make mistakes.  They are often harder on themselves than you could ever be so DON'T MAKE IT WORSE.

History of the Denver Broncos the beginning: 1960's

It's Football season!!! 

Time for friends to get together and watch their favorite teams.  So many traditions have been started because of football. 

How did it get started?  We are going to look at the Denver Broncos and how they got started.



First off did you know that our football team was not the first to be named Denver Broncos?  In 1921 the Midwest Baseball league was also called the Denver Broncos.

In 1960 is when the Denver Broncos Football began with seven other teams to make up the AFL.  They had a fan contest which is how they became known as the Denver Broncos.  In 1960 the Denver Broncos had the worst record of the AFL or 4-9-1 but it has to be said that one of their four winnings was against the Raiders.

In 1961 Wide Receiver Lionel Taylor was the first player to catch 100 passes in a professional season but the Broncos finished the season with only a 3-11 record.  This caused Jack Faulkner to replace Frank Filchock as coach.  In 1962 Coach Jack Faulkner receives coach of the year with a 7-7 record (Five of those loses were the last five of the season.)

1963 was not a good year for the Broncos as their record was 2-11-1 but this year Fullback Billy Joe wins AFL Rookie of the Year.

As it still is today, in 1964 Jack Faulkner is fired after a 0-4 record in the beginning of the season and is replaced by Mac Speedie.  He didn't do much better as they ended the season with a 2-11-1 record.

Loyalty is Loyalty and Denver fans remain loyal no matter what the Bronco record is.  In 1965 they finish with a 4-10 season but sell over 20,000 season tickets.

You guessed it, Mac Speedie is fired in 1966 and in come Ray Malavasi but with only a record of 0-2 Malavasi has his work cut out.  They finish with a 4-10 record and, again, the Denver Broncos are looking for a new coach.  Lou Saban comes in as both the General Manager and the Coach.

Running Back Floyd Little becomes the firs top draft pick ever signed by the Denver Broncos in 1967.  Even though they had their first top draft pick their season ends with a 3-11 record.

1968 the Stadium is renamed Mile High Stadium, capacity is increased to 50,000 and Marlin Briscoe became the first black starting Quarterback in professional football.  Their season ends with a 5-9 record with Briscoe throwing 14 touchdown passes and running for another three.

One decade down and in 1969 end their season with a 5-8-1 record.  During this decade the Denver Broncos are the only AFL team not to win a division or finish with a winning record.

Secrets of enjoying and singing karaoke

Okay, so you're shy.

Okay, so you couldn't carry a tune with a forklift.




There are very few things that are less "scarier" than being invited out by friends to go have a drink on a Saturday night.....only to find out AFTER you said yes that it's Karaoke night.

You have a few choices to make:

1. Call at the last minute and cancel blaming your spouse, your kids, your pets.  NAH!!
2. Sit there and watch everyone else having fun saying you have a sore throat.  NAH!!
3. Get up and join in the fun!!!!!!

The first thing you need to know, realize and believe is that YOU are the only one who really cares whether you can sing or not.

The second thing you need to know, realize and believe.....when you are singing karaoke the person who is having fun gets the loudest applause.  Remember the scene from "My Best Friend's Wedding" Cameron Diaz did not sing the song very well....and no one was impressed in the beginning because she wasn't having fun....It was when she started having fun that the crowd went crazy.  This doesn't just happen in the movies!! People who go to karaoke bars want to have fun!  If they wanted to hear "perfect" music they would stay home and listen to their IPod's.

The third and last thing you need to remember:  Only you can decide if you are going to have a good time.  It is not anyone else's responsibility to make sure YOU are happy....so go out there, have fun, be entertaining, make a fool of yourself and have the time of your life!!!

Beginners can always start with songs like Tequila as it doesn't get much easier than this.  This is a great song to get past your "stage freight" and get used to karaoke!!!

How to flirt

Let's be honest....there are some who can flirt and some who can't.  What is the difference?  Can you "learn" how to flirt or is it something you have to be born with?

YOU can learn how to flirt....if you are willing to do a few things.

1. You have to be open
2. You have to listen
3. You have to mean everything you say

Simple right?  Maybe, but these are what you have to be willing to do before you learn how to flirt.

The first thing you need to know is that flirting should be natural and subtle.  If you don't mean what you are saying you will never be able to flirt.  What you are saying cannot be "natural" if you don't believe it.  It can't be subtle if you are talking loudly......you don't want to be remembered as the person who yelled at them.

Start with a smile.  Whether you do this in the car on the way to the bar or party, in the bathroom or in a group.....SMILE.  The best way to feel good about yourself is to smile and no one wants to be flirted with by someone who doesn't feel good about themselves.  Smiling also sends a message that you are friendly, comfortable and approachable.

The touch, again subtle, is essential to flirting.....but be careful you can overdo it.  A hand on the shoulder, an easy placing of your hand on their arm, the brush of your hand on their back. 

(I love the line in the movie Hitch when Will Smith tells Kevin James: "Lean in, place your hand on the small of her back, say it in her ear like a secret. But watch your hand placement, too high says, 'I just wanna be friends,' too low says, 'I just wanna grab some ass."

Talk softly so they have to lean in towards you to hear you.  Anyone who approaches you...is interested.

Make eye contact with them and SMILE with your eyes. 
There is nothing more attractive than smiling eyes. 

The mouth can fake a smile...the eyes cannot.

LISTEN to what they are saying....and more importantly HEAR what they are saying so you can mention it, again, in a later time.  For example if you are sharing stories and they mention they had client show up late to an appointment file that away for later use.  When you excuse yourself to go to the bathroom say something like...I'll be right back, and unlike your client, I would never be late when meeting you.  These kind of comments cannot be forced or "thought about" too much...they have to be natural.

Another line from Hitch that I love is:

"Like I always tell my clients - begin each day as if it were on purpose."

Flirt with a natural purpose.  Be honest with your flirting...there is nothing worse than finding out who you were the first night you met is not who you are in real life. 

Things to avoid that make you an "obvious flirt" that no one wants to be around:

1. Flipping of the hair.  (Sublte twisting is okay but the head whip is not attractive)
2. Vulgar comments.  Even if they people around you are being vulgar, DON'T! 
3. Offend your friends or theirs by ignoring everyone else.
4. If you are going to buy them a drink....pull out the money and buy their friends too.  Don't be cheap and only buy the person you are flirting with a drink.  If you can't afford to buy the friends a drink, don't offer.

If you are not a natural, practice.  Flirting is a great way to get to know someone if it's honest.  Good luck.  Comment on what your favorite way to flirt is.

A young man was pulled over by the Pueblo Sheriff for speeding. The officer stepped out of his patrol car, adjusted his sunglasses, and swaggered up to the young man's window. "What you driving so fast for boy? You going to a fire? Let me see your license, boy." The young man handed over his license.

Then the officer noticed that the back seat of the car was full of large knives. The officer said, "Tell me boy, why you got them knives on that there back seat?" The young man replied, "Well sir, I'm a juggler." The officer spat some tobacco juice and then he said, "A juggler; well you don't say. Boy, put cha hands on the trunk of yer car; you going to jail!"

Organizing a Night Out and understanding bar etiquette

Time to have a GREAT NIGHT OUT!!!

Okay, you want to go out.  You want to go with a group of friends.  Did you know there is bar etiquette?

Before the NIGHT OUT!!

First thing you need to know if YOU choose the bar, YOU are considered the host for the evening.

Okay, you know which bar you want to host your gathering at (Jimmy's Tavern of course).

• Make sure the bar knows ahead of time you are coming to assure the table(s) are set up to fit the number of people coming.
• Establish a designated driver before going to the bar!  In a earlier blog there was a link about how much you can drink....it would be wise to revisit that website.
• Now this one may be what keeps you from "organizing" the outing:  How is the tab going to be paid?  If it is a single tab....the host leaves their card with the bartender.  If it is individual tab the host still needs to leave their card with the bartender "just in case" someone forgets to pay the tab.  (Personally don't invite anyone who would do this).  IF you are planning individual tabs where everyone either pays their own or the bill is split equally PLEASE plan ahead of time....there is nothing worse for a bartender who has taken care of you all night to have to run multiple credit cards for one tab.
• Discuss with the party whether "rounds" will be purchased or each person will order when ready.  It is bad manners to buy rounds that would obligate another to reciprocate. 

While AT THE BAR

• Okay ladies....there was a time when it was expected that the man purchase your drink.  Want Women's liberation.....buy him a drink.  Please don't expect that the men at your table will pick up the tab...this will lead to hurt feelings if they don't.
• Men:  It is nice if you offer to pay for the first drink but do not insist....you don't want it to lead to any misconceptions of any expectations.  AND remember this:  if you offer to buy her a drink, it means ANY drink she wants...don't be upset if she drinks "top shelf."
•  Bartenders and Waitstaff are busy!  Don't request their attention until you know what you are ordering. 
• The words "THANK YOU" and "EXCUSE ME" will also work in the bar environment!!  Being in a bar does not excuse bad manners.
• Know your limits.  There is nothing worse than "the drunk of the group."  Yes going to a bar involves drinking....but if you get angry when you drink too much...don't drink too much.  If you get sad when you drink too much don't drink too much.  EVERYONE in the bar, not just the people in your group, want to enjoy being there.  Fights and tears are not part of having a good time.
• If you see your waitstaff or bartender leaving....settle the tab with them before they leave.  Most will not ask for fear of offending their customers but they deserve the tip they earned!!!

Now we come to tipping:  revisit the blog on tipping and don't be cheap!  Great tip (pun intended) tip well the first drink and you will receive better service....but don't forget to continue tipping throughout the night if you pay by the drink.

The bartender and waitstaff ARE NOT YOUR MOTHER.  Don't make a mess and leave a mess at your table.  It has never hurt anyone to clean up after themselves.

LAST CALL really does mean LAST CALL.  It is rude to ask for "just one more."  It is also rude to ask to stay past closing time.  It is against the law to serve you after hours so don't put the bar and the bar staff in that position.

Leaving the bar does not mean your job as the host is over.  Make sure no one has left anything at the bar AND make sure ALL women leave safely!

10 steps to staying cool in this heat

It's hot!  And it's not even July yet!  There is no argument about that.  Here are some tips to help you stay cool this summer.

1. When your body is hot your body works hard to cool down.  (One example is sweating).  The one thing you want to do is drink something cold.  When you do this you take your internal organs and make them cold when your external organ is hot.  You do not want to take the opposing organs to this much of an extreme.  When you are hot, drink something warm first: tea, coffee, etc (preferably caffeine free: see #4).  This will normalize your body temperature easier.  Once you have done this you can enjoy your cold beverage.
2. I know, I know driving with the AC on full blast is nice.  BUT if you are in and out of your car a lot during the day this can actually be too hard on your body.  As with the cold drink, you are taking your body from one extreme to another. 
3. When it is extremely hot...you know like the weather we have had the last week and expect to have for yet another week....wet towels ARE YOUR FRIEND!  A cool towel (not cold and not ice) draped around your neck will do wonders.  I will also run cool water over my wrists.  Avoid ICE when you are hot.  Again, it is too big of an extreme and you won't feel any cooler using ice vs. cool towels. 
4. NO SODA, yes this means pop!  Soda causes dehydration.  Okay study shows caffeine and sugar will cause dehydration.  Don't believe me....try it.  On a hot day drink a soda.  15 minutes later you will be thirsty if not immediately afterwards.  If you are thirsty drink water.  I love to add lime to my water.  It is recommended that eight (8) glasses of water a day is needed to just to survive.  This amount does not take into consideration if you exercise or the temperature.  Use this calculator to determine how much water you should be drinking daily.
5. Eat a lot of fruit.  Fruit is a refreshing way for your body to get fluids that are lost through sweat. 
6. Cover your head if you plan on being outside. Hats, Hats, Hats are not just a fashion statement.  Wearing a hat can help you reduce your core body temperature.
7. Eat smaller meals.  When your body digests food it it focused on digestion and will not cool your core temperature as well.  Eat smaller meals more frequently.
8. Loose, light clothing.  Black absorbs the heat.  Light colored clothes will keep you cooler.  Wear loose clothes so your body is able to breathe.
9. Try to do all of your running around in the morning or early evening.  Temperatures are cooler at this time and you will avoid taking your body to extremes.
10. We hear about energy costs getting approval to raise their rates so running the AC is getting expensive.  Have your warm beverage at home then go to Jimmy's Tavern and soak up their AC and have a nice cold beverage!!!
